A random guy approached me in the streets of Almaty and shook my hand: „Welcome to Kazakhstan!“, followed by a „Autostop?“. Surprising! „How do you know?“ He pointed on my uniform. This was the first time in my life, that I met someone in public who recognizes the hitchhiking uniform. It is not only a uniform, but also identity marker of an alternative hitchhiking culture, which is popular in Russia, but not in Western Europe. But here in Kazakhstan people know. And it made me very happy having this experience.

It was at the end of my China expedition. A 15.032 km run with 86 rides, exploring the four corners of China. I accomplished this route in 16 days and 11 hours. It was a long tour, I hardly left the road. And there have been a lot of challenges along the way. Many difficult places and situations, where I had to use all my experience and hitchhiking tactics to keep on moving. Beside this there is another challenge. If you go a distance of 15.000 km, it also means, that you have to sit 15.000 km in vehicles. Hard work for your back.

On top of this I added a little detail to increase the difficulty. I was on this expedition without spending money. I arrived 30€ in my pocket and left with 33€. It was just an experiment. See how it is possible. Basically you have to life from the charity of others. I never asked for anything, which also means, that when I was really hungry and in the need of something, there was no demand, but just me and the situation. For the experience and the challenge. Just a sidenote. I don’t really like moneyless traveling. It is very exhausting for me. Not my way to go. My focus is totally on movement. Doing my tour as quick as possible. With hitchhiking.

I don’t see myself „visiting China“, but on my way – a road which leads through China this time. When I do long distance hitchhiking you rather compare it with bicycle touring. Or long distance walkers like Karl Bushby, whom I feel really inspired by. Karl Bushby is a British adventurer, who left his home in 1998 to walk from southern tip of Argentina back to England. 16 years later he completed 29.000 km and is still on his way. One of his biggest achievements is the Bering Straight crossing by foot in 2005. Since then he is struggling with Russian immigration to continue his route through Siberia. He also passed the Darien Gap by walking, got kidnapped by the Guerilla and ended up drinking cola with the commander. This man has an unprecedented endurance and is following his mission. I admire this.

My 15.000 km long expedition throught China has been a big challenge and I reached my limits during this run. I can emphasize much better now, what a „long run“ means. And I totally appreciate Alexej Vorovs accomplishment within his „Very small planet tour“. He did a full overland circumnavigation of our earth with hitchhiking in 500 hours. Means 20.000 km in around 21 days. And I can tell you, it is fucking hard. Not even to get your rides, but also to sit and move. 20.000 km in 500 hours is unreal.

On top of that: The first section of 9.900 km from St. Petersburg to Vladivostok (nearby) was covered by Alexej in 168 hours. 7 days on the road without sleep and then performing such a good run, which is far from everything I ever covered on my tours. It is not about luck at all, but about decisions, difficulties, problems solving. It is about skill. Hitchhiking skill. I still learn a lot about movement, when I do a big trip like my China tour. I still do many mistakes. I don’t know if I could do 20.000 km in 500 hours. It is definitely a massive performance.

We all have in common to experience directly, that this world is far from being endlessly big. The earth is tiny. China right around the corner of my hometown and South-East Kazachztan in the realm of St. Petersburg Hitchhiking community. You need some grit to go on that way and crossing all the world. But it does not matter, if you do it with hitchhiking, by foot, bicycle or any other way of movement. Most important is always the distance you travel.

My hitchhiking suit is taylor made by Alexej Vorov. All existing hitchhiking suits of this kind, worn by people in Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Poland, Baltic States andby us in Germany, are made by Alexej Vorov. And if this random guy in Kasachstan is recognizing me as a hitchhiker, it goes back to him and all the other fellows, hitting the roads of the world in their yellow racing-club uniforms. And when I am coming from a massive tour through China and then someone in Kazachztan „knows“ what my emergence is about, then I feel really proud to be part of all this. Part of all those geeks who hit the road and kick the shit! Move around the our tiny little planet. Warm Roads to all of you!

What a wonderful day of my life! I gout this sausage through the customs! For some, this might just be a simple hungarian salami from the supermarket. For me, it is, after months of abstinence, tortured by American Analog Food, trapped in the hopeless search for a reasonable cheese, for me, this salami is a piece homeland. Symbol of comfort. Balm for my tired soul. I even would consider this hungarian salami being a real sausage, because it is the most sausage-like product I had in the last 18 months. (I am from a region in Germany which is famous for its sausages, so I am picky.

I arrived in Hongkong. Warmroads discovered the hidden landway to Europa! Basically the road is free to go now. Hitchhiking possible. I don’t depend on annoying flights anymore and can make my way home inedependently. But I won’t do that immediately. Too much fun ahead of me. And I have to say, the nearer I get to the end of my expedition, the less I want to get home. Strange.

Here is the plan: The next 3-4 weeks I’m gonna stay in Hongkong, because after New York and Buenos Aires this is a third city, where I would like to spend some more time in. So I do. because I can.

After this I have a exciting route to go, from Hongkong to Leipzig. I have now around 75.000 km hitchhiked and I wanted to complete my trip with 100.000 km. But that is not as easy as you might think. Hard to believe with this route, but I did some calculation and even if I would do a small detour and go from Germany through Murmansk (North-West corner of Russia), yeah even then I would hardly do 20.000 km on my way home. As you can see, the biggest part of my trip is over. Hongkong Leipzig is just the closing time leisure trip.

So I make a run through China and enter Kazachztan, before I go to explore the Chan states. Especially about Kyrgistan I am already very fascinated and an old friend of mine is living in Osch at the moment. I’m gonna pay a visit and explore the country. Then my Co-Blogger and Translator will pick em up in Iran, where we gonna stay fr some weeks before heading back to Europa. First weekend of August is the European Hitchgathering, where all the european hitchhiker scene is getting together. I will be there. What about you?

I just hitchhiked around 6 weeks through Japan and did about 5000 km there. By accident. What a fun country. Japanese kitchen is much better than my introduction might assume. But hey, even the best sushi is not sausage at all. However, I am very fresh and happy and I am going back to work now. I want to publish some articles about Japan in the next days for you! A bit special this time, I will come up with some photos. I can already say, that Japan was the most beautiful country I have been so far. Stay alert!

Panama

Looking through the window at my side. To the driver pointing on me: „He has no seat-belt.“ Driver: „Ahm…well. There is no seat-belt on this side.“ Policemen: „This is forbidden, you can’t drive like this.“ Driver: „Okay, what are we going to do then?“ Police: „How about….a coffee?“ Driver: „One dollar for a coffee?“ Police: „Yes.“

Canada

Note: It is forbidden t hitchhike in British Colombia.„Where are you heading to?“ „Vancouver.“ „What, all the way? Well….there is a bus station, I could give you a ride to.“ „Nono, it is alright. I am hitchhiking. It is not far. One ride and I am there.“ „Yeah thats true.“ „I just wanted to walk a bit further, I don like this position. Maybe use the onramp over there.“ „You can walk under the highway pass. There is more space to stop. And you sure will find a ride.“ „Cool.“ „The guys from the highway patrol might give you a hard time, when they see you. I don’t care, I am not from the highway patrol, as you can see.“

Northern California

Two cars stop. „What are you doing here?“ „Hitchhiking.“ „You are not supposed to do that here!“ I give him already my passport. „aha, where are you going?“ „Seattle.“ „To the jail?“ My suit, my suit….. He checks my papers, the younger cop arrives and starts chatting with me. „Ah don’t worry, you are not in trouble.“ As if I would be worried. I tell him my story. The other cop comes back. „Hey Frank, this guy hitchhiked all over the world!“ „Really?“ „Man, I would love to give him a ride to Winters, but I guess this wouldn’t help.“ Third car arrives, which is very unusual. They called for the Sergeant. Now all three of them are surrounding me. Sergeant: „Where are from?“ „Pardon?“ He gives me a clap on the shoulder. „Where are you from?“ „Oh, Germany.“ „Nono, where in Germany?“ „Frankfurt.“ „Oh, I lived in Frankfurt for two years. And Frank, you also lived in Germany, right?“ „Right.“ Short chat about how beautiful Germany is and that they really liked Sachsenhausen. Then they suddenly all turn around and walk to their cars. While they go the Sergeant said: „Well, you are not supposed to hitchhike here. So….hitchhike your way out! I don’t want to read about you afterwards!“ Alright.

Special: The Mexican

„They deported me already 13 times.“ „Really?“ „Yes, but I always came back! They fly me out, then I go dancing, to some party in Tijuana. And when I am drunk, I go back.“ „So it is possible to cross the border?“ „In the past it was easier. But I know how to do it. If you do it the first time, it might be difficult. But I did it so often, not a problem. If they catch me and deport me, I just try the next day.“ „Do you have friends, that pick you up from the border?“ „Nono, my family sends me money and I take a Taxi to the Greyhound station and then go by bus. I don’t know why they still deport me. It is a waste of money!“

What is that on the slip road? It was dark already. Something lying there? No, it seems it is a human being. A picture of misery. Some guy digged his head into his knees.I heard puling, while I approached him. „Hey man, are you allright?“ „Buuaaahhh, NO!“, he started cryng. „Whats wrong?“ „They want to kill me. Better go and safe yourself.“ Drugs, distressed, schizo, no clue what was going on. „Do you need help?“ „No!“ „Shall I leave you alone?“ „Yes, please, leave me alone.“ „Well okay….then….but….just to let you know, I would like to hitchhike here later.“

Shit. Slip road blocked. Poor guy, but I can’t help him. Especially if he doesn’t want to. I walked to the gas station and was looking for a car there. Sometime later another weirdo came to the ramp and they started to have a „conversation“. Weirdo 1 was standing in the middle of the street and screaming towards weirdo to: „Leave me alone“ Don’t get near me!“. The he saw me, standing on the other side of the road and watching the scenery: „Hey dude, now you can come and safe me.“ If somewhere is trouble, usually my inner mediator appears and I have to do something. So I started walking across the street, to look whats going on there. It was close to escalate.

Half way through I thought to to myself…..no…actually….I don’t want that to become my problem now. So I turned around. The two weirdos seemed to become friends afterwards. They became even a team. Weirdo one was sitting on his backpack and still with his head between his legs, while weirdo two had a sign now and tried to hitchhike. Which was more like, bumping the sign aggressively on peoples front shields, while they pass by. Interesting technique. I doubt they made it.

I found my next ride at the gas station. Seemed to be the better option in this situation. Don’t get me wrong. I have nothing against weirdos, however fucked up they are, I am always up to help, if they want. But they are not the best company for getting the next ride.

From the archive. This article is about my trip to Syria in 2008.

It was at the high time of one of my first nights in Syria/Aleppo when the following picture was taken. Somewhat in the summer of 2008. We had been on our way to a Couchsurfer and had some kind of transport problems, I don’t remember it right. Ralf and I started to stop cars to get rides for our group (of at least 10-15 people). We were finally – all together – picked up by one of those great Toyota Pick-Ups that were driving around in Syria everywhere by that time.

Already my arrival to Syria had been a huge coincidence. The idea to go there arose when Ralph explained me in the year before that he would go to Syria. Hitchhiking there from Germany. I just thought: “Sure, I’ll do that too, sounds fun!” We haven’t made any plans together. I knew he was on his way, but I had no information on when he had left Germany and where he was located at the moment. In Aleppo I entered the house of my host and who was sitting there, on the couch? Ralph. “Cheers”. “Yo cheers, you here as well?” “Just checked in 15 minutes ago”. Well, the world can really be a freaking small place. Two guys from Czech Republic called Pavel and Mira have been there too.

Back to the night on the Pick-Up. We all were a little drunk, full of euphoria and had an evening of fun. Our plan was to hitchhike to Beirut the next day. When we heard, that our two Czech friends were “hitchhikers”, we of course had to challenge them for a race there. “Come on guys! We can do it! You against us!” We pushed ourself with that idea the whole evening long and I can clearly remember us facing each other at 4 am on the street calling us names, grapple with each other and just trying to celebrate a little rivalry. We were competitors from now on!

We found out later that both of them had never really hitchhiked before. Only taken a ride once from a truck. Not very optimal for that route. Also: Travelling in Lebanon was something the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had clearly put a warning on during this time. The route was also not very easy to hitchhike. We were a bit overmotivated and drunk the day before, to push our friends into this crackpot idea. That Mira and Pavel were total greenhorns, makes the whole thing much funnier in retrospective.

We started at sunrise and soon after the first ride, we were invited by two Syrians for a very good breakfast with a lot of Humus and bread. I will never forget the olive oil, so delicious. Holy shit. That was really good stuff. With a short detour to Hama, where we checked the old water wheels, we worked our way south and were soon seeing the Lebanese mountains at the horizon.

Our last ride was a Jordanian couple, with a stranger in the back. She looked as if she had already tried quite some plastic surgery and her husband (?) like a rich, suspicious Macho, who loves fake tits. The stranger in the back was the best. Not speaking any English word but constantly talking to us. He was a very funny guy indeed. We were boozing down the curvy road, super speeding, towards Beirut. One of the not so many rides in my life where I really feared death when on the two laned road four cars were passing each other parallel. And that on this steep terrain. Our driver was no better.

<img class="size-full wp-image-783" src="https://warmroads.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/Richtung-Libanon.jpg" alt="Straße Richtung Libanon.
We made it to Beirut before dark, but when we exited at the bus terminal, we hat a fight with our last ride. Our driver suddenly realized that he was a taxi, pointed at an old writing on the car and wanted to see some money. This was Ralf’s time since he was denying paid transport as consequently as nobody else. We were hitchhikers! And maybe also a bit cheap. A strong discussion followed. The two of them formed a good couple. The one angry, wild and with arms waving, the other one calm and strategically stubborn making clear that nobody was going to pay anything here. Several times I thought: “Now it escalates, now he will hit him and make us to pay.” But that did not happen and of course we did not pay as well.

As we finally had our backpacks back in our hands, we went towards the meeting point. We asked the first soldier for the way and he was going crazy, when he saw us. “You are the two Germans! You lost the race! Hahaha!” What? Damn, the two Czech had made it before us? How could they have made it, ffs? We were disappointed. It became clear later: They had taken a bus at the border. Within the competition rules this means a disqualification. Ha! We won the great race to Beirut! As price they should have invited us for 2 beers, which we never got until now. If you ever read this guys: Yes, you still own us beer! Gambling debts are debts of honor!

Satisfaction occured the next day. We checked out the city. At some point Pavel and Mira vanished without a trace. We waited a long time for them, but they were gone. Later I received a SMS from Mira: “Durchfall* as fuck! Sorry guys, we had shitstorm at Starbucks. See you in the hotel.” Years later we were still laughing about the Denglish. Epic SMS. It might have come from the Falafel, that both had eaten the day before at the border. Looking at Miras soft knees it was pretty obvious already.

<img class="size-full wp-image-781" src="https://warmroads.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/Shitstorm-alert.jpg" alt="Shitstorm alert bei Mira. This shot was taken close before Mira experienced the huge blast. Look at his legs.

Ralph was hit the day after. Heavy shitstorms on our way back to Aleppo. So badly, that he agreed to take a bus . A very rare case. He must have felt close to die. Because: We never take buses.

Good old Syria. I miss you very much. May you overcome all the misery. May you be peaceful and safe one day! It was my favorite country to travel in.

Tomorrow morning I will start a 4000 km long hitchhiking tour towards New York. There is a upcoming heatwave in the canadian praries, which promises temperatures about 0° for the next three days. I want to use the mild weather to begin my tour, before it is getting down to -15° in the middle of the week.

The tour is a test run for my big winter hitchhiking tour in Januray, which will lead me up to Alaska. On the one hand i want to have a look on the route towards New York and on the other hand i want to test out some strategies for winter hitchhiking. I will write a more specific artile about this in Januray, where i will explain my plan. Beside this i also want to see till what temperatures i can sleep outside. -15° shouldn´t be a problem.

My equipment is not complete tho. I bought a jacket, hat, scarf and some trousers in the nearby Thrift store for around 25€. This stuff is not enough for extreme conditions, but better than nothing for this moment.

But i have already two very important pieces. One is my handcrafted Vorov winter sleeping bag, which almost killed me already, while trying to pick it up. I didn´t had the chance to test him so far, as the lowest temperatures during my camping on the last trip have been around 2°- -2°. It was not possible to keep the sleeping bag closed in thos nights. Just too warm outside.

My handcrafted winter sleeping bag.

Also i got myself some Baffin Workwear boots for 35€. Good Canadian Quality with steel caps and for temperatures down to -100°. there are as big as my bagpack. Real moon-boots! I like them. Could be cleaned tho. But most important, that they are warm. I think I will have lots of fun with those babys.

I miss some mittens really urgently, but this has time till January. Beside that I am dreaming of a cozy pair of Polar-Bear-Trousers like the guys in this picture got.

I want to start from the very beginning. Some Indian guy gave me the first ride yesterday. It was cold this morning, the heating in the car was fully turned up. Comftable 45° in the car. Even readjusting my glasses couldn´t prevent the warm air sream from sucking all liquid out of my eyes.

I soon recognized, that my driver regularly passed over the hard shoulders of the road. First I thought he is a bad driver, but then I blamed it on cultural reasons. Maybe Indians don´t take it to precise with those hard shoulders in general. My driver was wearing a hoody and together with his bristly but yet imposing beard, he looked slightly threatening, All the way he was not speaking any word. Just a short notice after 50 km: „I have not english.“ We remained silent.

I was hitchhiking the 600km from Armstrong to Seattle the 4th time now and knew every exit and city on the way by heart. My indian ride dropped me at the big highway intersection in Kamloops. The position I wanted to end up the least. Lots of fast traffic. I found a place with a resonable keeping area and started thumbing, while alot fast traffic passed by. After 20 Minutes Ryan stopped.

„Get in!“, he was grouching, when I opened the door. Where you go? Merrit. Okay. I sat on the front seat and immediately recognized, that there was a big tube television behind me and I couldn´t lean back. „I was hitchhiking by myself, thats why I picked you up“, Ryan said, more grumbling than telling.

Ryan was wearing a yellow workwear jacket, his bus was full of shit and he was in a very bad mood. Told me something about Alberta, running away from the police and some friends, who drove off and „Stole my gas!“ He started screaming, raged behind the steering wheel. Bloodshot eyes and a rough, stubbly beard covering his grimly face. I knew, I was driving with a psychopath.

I am not afraid at all of people and neither I hesitate to get in touch in those situations. If you get into a car, you have to deal with lots of different kind people. I am hitchhiking since 8 years and I never had a driver who seriously wanted to harm me. He had a hard time, was raging, so I tried to talk to him and bring him down. I don´t expect anyone to turn his hate against me, even if he is obviously totally insane. And so far I was always right with my instincts.

We drove into the middle of nowhere, next city 80 km away. Merrit. Between nothing. His side mirror folded all the time and I had to stick my hand out of the window, to hold it, so that he could see, what was going on on my side. We drove on the very right lane. He constantly saw police cars approaching, when cars from behind appeared. But there where none. He was paranoid.

We drove and remained silent. A truck passed by on the left and right after Ryan pulled over the steering wheel and we drove also on the left lane, as if we would overtake another car, but there was none! I immediately became awake and threw a questioning look at Ryan. His eyes where widely open, he cramped the steering wheel and looked like someone stabbed his back recently. Is he totally crazy now. It took me some milliseconds to realize, what was going on. We slightly turned from the left lane back on the right side and moved towards the roadside ditch. He had an epileptic seizure. I immediately crapped the wheel and tried to bring us back on the track, but he was cramping to strong and I could only move the wheel a few millimeters. Maybe i saved my own live with this, I don´t know.

We took off the road and I saw us slipping into the ditch. We where heading towards an upward slope. And then the crash. I can remember everything. I had no seat belt, because this old Dodge Van did not had any on the passenger seat. Not to mention aribags. I immeditaley got smashed out of my seat into the windshild, then against my own door, the car might have collide with the slope, before we flipped over to the left. Then silence.

I could move, was totally shocked and in panic. I was screaming constantly: „Holy shit, holy shit!“ My first instinc was out here. Out out out. Where is the door? Above my head. I tried to open it, not possible. I tried to kick out the wind shild. Out out out. God, nothing is moving. In all my black despair I tried to open the door again. „Are you allright?“, I screamed to Ryan, more out of a reflex than being concious about it. He was somewhere under me and on him was a fridge lying, which i was sitting on. The window. I could open the window and got out of the car, like climbing out of a submarine. Looking around. Some person ran over from the other side of the road, another on was already on the phone. I felt warm blood running down my face and dropping on my new gloves.

<img class="size-full wp-image-1171" src="https://warmroads.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/Accident-dodge.jpg" alt="Das Auto. Ein alter Dodge Van von der Böschung auf die linke Seite geschleudert.

My focus changed immediately. „Buddy, are you allright?“ I heard a moaning coming fro under the fridge. „Buddy, don´t worry, we get you out here.“ I slipped back into the car and had only one thought, to get the fridge off him. I tried helplessly to heave the fridge through the window, which was obviously much to small and my endeavor beyond hope. More people gathered outside. We opened the door, took out the fridge and some person commanded me: „You look like you should sit down here now!“

Meanwhile 8-10 people arrived. All emergency responders. A car with two nurses stopped. It is not important here, but tears coming, while I am writing this. I am so grateful for this people. Canadians have been awesome. In this situation I was under shock, my whole body was shaking. I couldn´t let any emotion go, had to function. I am traumatized.

Humans.

At some point I ended up in the ambulance. They whiped the blood from my face and took the glas out of my eyes and forehead. If they would take me into the hospital? Yes. Where? Kamloops. Ryan was brought in. He couldn´t remember anything , said he was not picking up any hitchhiker. After some minutes, he recognized me sitting behind him. It took him three attempts to turn around and finally see me. His face turned illuminated: „Ah youuu dude!“, now everything became clear to him. „I am so sorry man! Sorry for that! Sorry that this happened to you!“, he excused himself. „No worries man, shit happens.“

I wasn´t angry at all. I knew he was in a much worser position than I was with my minor wounds. He wanted to go to Merrit and park his van there for the winter, to fix it. His whole property was dumped in the ditch and the Police, whom he was running from, was right beside him. He propably will have to go to jail.

I was looking for my hat and my glasses, which I found only on half of it. Really Kamloops? The policemen said he could give me a ride to Merrit. I felt, according to the circumstances, good and it didn´t made sense for me, to go back to Kamloops, sit in the hospital for a few hours and then continue on the road towards Seattle. I wanted to arrive, especially after this. I had still 400 km in front of me.

After signing some piece of paper and not even having to show my health insurance (thanks Canada) I could go, but was told to get to the hospital, if i feel dizzy, feel bad or certain pain occurs.

Brad, the policemen, gave me a lift in a state, where hitchhiking is illegal. He was hitchhiker by himself, went from Canada to Mexico 2 years ago. In 10 days down and back. Respect. Moving similar than me, staying on the road and camping out. We understood well. He bought me a coffee and some muffin and dropped me at the onramp in Merrit, from where I hitchhiked on to Seattle.

At the border, where the immigration police ripped me apart the last few times, I was interviewed by some elderly lady. Where i am going? Seattle, Why? To pick up a sleeping bag there, tomorrow I continue to Calgary. Aha, she repetetly sounded. I couldn´t tell if she was suspicious or agreeing. I knew the procedure and started to tell, what I always tell: That I am hitchhiking around the world and going to Alaska in December. Why December? Cause there are no roads and I move on the Winter-Trails to get towards Russia. Aha. I told her, that I went the 1200 km to Seattle last week already, to get this fucking parcel, which wasn´t there at this time. All the blues. She did not ask about it, but I also told her, that I was in a serious car accident this morning and pointed on my battered face.

„Stefan Stefan….“, she was shaking with her head and pressing her lips slightly together. We looked at each other seriously for a while. Slowly but heartfully she said: „Your poor Mum!“ I noded her assent. (Sorry mum!). „But you gotta do, what you gotta do“, i replied. „You gotta do, what you gotta do“, she repeated slowly and comprehensive, gave me back my passport and was wishing me a safe way to Seattle.

The air-condition in the car helped me, to survive the omnipresent mugginess, which stressed me alot. I walked two kilometers along this curvy jungle street and was already totally exhausted. Everything was wet, allthough it wasn´t raining. The next 38km towards civilisation i was happy to got with this Pick-Up.

We climbed the next steep hill and another curve should introduce the following abyss. We didn´t go fast, but i recognized, that the car slowly started turning around. The car breakaway! My driver immideately started to scream: “DEUS DEUS DEUS!!!!!”, again and again. As if this would help. I tensly grabed the handle above the door and expected the car to overturn soon, when we get crosswise to the street. But the car luckily turned on. Firt relief, but we were still drifting towards the abyss beside the street.

I knwe at this point already, that we wont have a brtal accident. Mit hitchhikers-brain immediately took the lead: “Hopefully we can go on soon.” Don´t lose any time. We stopped finally. Standing half on the street and half on the abyss. We have been fortunate to not go down the abyss. And the car was still working. Just we couldn´t get out of where we stucked.

Lucky us again, my captain from the cargo boat, with which i crossed the Darien Gap, came along with another Jeep. Oh captain, my captain. He pulled us out, thanks for this. It was the first time, that i had an accident since 8 years of hitchhiking. We haven´t been fast, it was just because of the humidity. Unbelievable, how this could have happenede. I had to remember the accident i was discovering in the Amazonas. Thanks Deus…..

There is not much in my hitchhikers life that didn´t pick me up so far. Cars, Trucks, Pick-Ups, Motorbicycles, Police, Police on Motobicycles, Emergency Cars, Diggers, Donkey Wagons, 120.000€ Mercedeses, Train, Driving School (oh i was working so long towards this), Top-Manager, Families, Mothers with their Babys, Beduin Tribeleaders, Sailing Boats, Cargo Boats, Airplanes (technically spoken), Dinghies.

But even smaller is the list of vehicles i want to catch a ride with. There are: Small airplanes and a hopped cargo train on it. Which pleasent surprise then, if i encounter something along the road, which i never had before and which is kinda special. So happened in Honduras. My last lift towards the border. When this catafalque passed by i thought: „Oh nice, i never had a lift with a catafalque. Wished he had stopped.“ And then, as if he could read my mind, he stopped few meters behind me. A waving hand came out of the window. I got a place on the platform of the Pick-Up directly beside the coffin. I even asked in the end if there was really a dead body inside and they confirmed.

Seems like i had my first lift with a corpse.
