No, i didn´t had to pay for Visa. Just an administration fee at most of the borders. So keep some dollars with you. Except Honduras, the countries have been quite chilled and if you don´t travel by night (which i use to do) it should be fine my dear. Don´t be scared. South and Central America has a much worser reputation, than it is in reality. 🙂

As a Croatian I saw we don’t need any visas for Central America, can stay in almost every country for 90days….I might try to negotiate that for the first time in my life :/
