I had a lift with a local recently in Tenerife who told me that hitch-hiking is illegal in Tenerife. I don’t think he was lying, but is he mistaken?

Hey Francois,

nothing is impossible, but is indeed very hard, especially as non Russian and during these days of political tensions.

Hey !
I am doing a world tour hitchhiking, and planning ahead my options to go to the other side of the Pacific. Since the boat crossing is very very long, I want to see if there are other options, and in the Bering strait. There are unfortunately only a few informations available about hitchhiking there on internet.
Would you say it's impossible or just very hard and long ? You have been there, so you should know more :) I would love to talk more about it, send me an email to exchange about the subject :)

I’m American, and I most always pick up hitchhikers. Having a reputable look will certainly help get rides as will a backpack.

Once in the car, chat, be friendly, and make small talk. Do NOT insult our country or fellow Americans. Also be careful about talking politics, as the author said; many folks have strongly held political beliefs and half of them probably have views which strongly conflict with yours.

To emphasize these points, allow me to share the story of the one time I have thrown a hitchhiker out of my car. Over the course of 30 minutes, this Berliner went on about how America ruined the world, how heartless our economic system was, and how terrible our gun rights are. I have driven someone thirty minutes out of my way (diverting me for an hour total), but I could not listen to this guy go on and on. I told him “if you hate our country so much, leave it, and I stopped the car.”

It was disappointing, because I’ve picked out some fascinating people from overseas (a Tanzanian man and a Czech girl stand out), and I LOVED hearing their stories!

This is great! I am 19, living in the USA. I've always been curious as to why no one ever lets anyone in, always keeping things on the surface. Other countries aren't like that?

Hey man
I have been hitchhiking for a while in china. I'm not going the intensive way as you do but rather spend 1-4 nights in each new place I go to. Also I don't mind paying transportation once in a while, especially to get out of big cities.
But it was very fun to read everything. I found myself in similar cases. The policemen always sticking around like mosquitos in rest areas/toll Gates, the minivans asking for money, and the politeness cigarettes/meals. Got free hotels as well, the repetitive police checks for minorities..

But as you said, the whole thing is to believe in the power of hitchhiking. A lot of Chinese guys will be very annoying and trying their best to convince you that hitchhiking is impossible, that you are in a bad location and that you should take a train. When you don't speak Chinese it becomes a huge waste of time and efforts.

Just started to read your blog. I hitchhiked through Europe in my younger years. This has pushed those memories to the fore again and made me remember there is a greater world than that I see every day.

Thank you.

Hey! I'm planning on moving around Chile by hitchhiking as much as possible to meet locals.

Have you done any wild camping? I'm thinking about it to save some money, I know the accumulation of hostels can become quite expensive.

You also said you rented a jeep in the desert. did you actually rent it or what is part of a tour? Do you remember the name of the company in that case?

Many thanks :)
